What are lab created diamonds?

You may be wondering – are lab grown diamonds real diamonds? The short answer is yes.

Lab grown diamonds are diamonds that are originated through cutting-edge technology that replicates the natural diamond creation process. Lab created diamonds are made of the same material as mine created diamonds and are atomically identical to mine created diamonds, meaning that they have the same physical, chemical and optical properties as mine created diamonds.

Lab created diamonds may be referred to as lab grown diamonds or lab diamonds. While lab created diamonds are grown in a lab, the facts show that they are in fact real diamonds, because modern technology has allowed for the recreation of the diamond-creation process within a lab. Along with the many benefits of lab created diamonds, even celebrities have endorsed and wear lab created diamonds.

What are the benefits of lab created diamonds?lab grown diamond

There are several benefits of lab created diamonds, including that they are:

  • eco-friendly;
  • ethically sourced, and
  • competitively priced.

Since lab created diamonds are grown in a lab, almost zero waste is created. This is compared to mined diamonds, where almost 100 square feet or land is disrupted and almost 6000 pounds of mineral waste is created for every carat of diamond. Lab created diamonds are significantly less detrimental to the environment as it takes considerably less energy to grow a diamond in a lab than it does to dig it out of the ground. It is actually in the interest of lab growers to minimize the amount of energy they use in the process to save money and decrease their costs, therefore reducing waste.

Lab created diamonds are ethically sourced, meaning that they are conflict free and result in zero injuries during creation, compared to mined diamonds which result in 1 injury for every 1,000 workers. The other aspect to this is that mined diamonds are not 100% traceable, meaning that you will never truly know if your diamond was ethically sourced or not. Several years ago, the mined diamond industry came under scrutiny with unethical production practices were exposed. These diamonds, sometimes referred to as blood or conflict diamonds, were funding violence and exploiting miners and their families.

In addition, lab created diamonds are competitively priced, so you can have a larger, better quality diamond for a more-affordable price. All Fiori Jewels jewellery is made with recycled gold, further minimizing its impact on the environment. Customers are able to have a larger lab created diamond for a fraction of the price of a mine created diamond, for the same budget.

Why should I buy lab created diamonds instead of real diamonds?

According to the FTC, a diamond is a diamond; it does not matter if it was grown underground or in a lab. Along with the several benefits mentioned above, a lab created diamond is forever, and you will be able to pass down the gem for generations to come, with the knowledge that it is an eco-friendly and ethically-sourced diamond.

How are lab created diamonds grown?

Just like mined diamonds, lab created diamonds are grown using the same amount of heat, pressure and carbon dioxide. Deep inside the earth, carbon dioxide is mixed with a temperature of approximately 1,200 degrees Celsius and put under pressure of roughly 727,000 pounds per square inch creates a diamond. The diamonds are then brought to surface level by natural events such as volcanic explosions.

Lab created diamonds, on the other hand, are grown in a controlled laboratory using innovative technology that replicates the diamond creation process in the earth. There are two ways that lab created diamonds are grown, which includes High Pressure-High Temperature (HPHT) and Chemical Vapor Deposition (CVD).

Are lab created diamonds certified?

Lab created diamonds are certified using the same process and certification labs as mine created diamonds. Lab created diamonds are sent to a gem lab that specializes in grading diamonds. This includes Gemological Institute of America (GIA), International Gemological Institute (IGI), Hoge Raad voor Diamant (HRD), and more.

In addition, lab created diamonds are certified using the same grading aspects as mined diamonds – by the 4 C’s (cut, clarity, color and carat). The organization that is grading the diamond judges the diamond on how well the it was cut, how clear the it is, its color and its carat size. Once they do so, they give the diamond the official certification.
